  • Passport
  • Yellow Card
  • Copy of travel insurance
  • Photocopies of important documents (leave an extra set with someone in the states)
  • Money - 2006 bills or newer, 50s and 100s get a better exchange rate
    • $50 for a visa
    • $200 recommended for taxi rides, food, etc.

Daily necessities

  • Hand sanitizer
  • Medications including malaria pills
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunblock
  • 2-4 water bottles (preferably a style that has a covered rim or mouthpiece, nalgene is good)
  • Insect repellent
  • Bathroom Toiletries
  • Towel
  • Hand lotion
  • Eye drops
  • Soap, shampoo & conditioner
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Razor (shaving is to be done with drinking water only)
  • Floss


Most types of food can be bought in country

  • Granola bars
  • Drink powder
  • Dried fruit
  • Nuts


  • Headlamp/ flashlight
  • Computer (optional)
  • Camera and charger
  • Money belt
  • Notepad and pen
  • Calculator (at least one person)
  • Utility multitool/ swiss army knife
  • Light sleeping bag

it is a good idea to treat your clothes with permethrin

  • Sun shielding hat
  • Walking shoes
  • Work gloves (available in country, but can be brought if specific type is desired)
  • Flip flops for bathing
  • 3 pairs durable pants (jeans, hiking, khakis)
  • University of Minnesota t-shirts (if you have)
  • Rain gear
  • Sweat shirt/Light jacket
  • Set of clothes for hope (ie sweats or something comfy) – these can double as clean clothes to wear home on the plane
  • Tons of socks & plenty of underwear
  • Sleeping clothes

Note: the red dirt in the area will stain clothing.
